Ya’ll Welcome Rabbi Allison Vann

by trubin 10/5/2011 10:33:00 AM
Ya’all give a warm welcome to Cleveland’s newest Rabbi, Allison Vann, who moved from San Antonio, Texas in June with husband Charlie, 5-year old son Isaac, and 2 dogs, Frankie and Zeke.  (Zeke was named by the Rabbi’s Confirmation Class and is short for Zachariah, the prophet.)  A perfect day off for Rabbi Vann includes a short to-do list, a long nap, a great book, a walk with the dogs, lots of playtime with Isaac, and a yummy family pizza dinner.  When asked about her favorite place in Cleveland, she smiled and said “Suburban Temple, of course!”  Allison “grew up” at Camp Harlam in the Poconos (1979-1986) and met he husband at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas.  She was the first ordained woman rabbi in San Antonio and chose Cleveland because of its large Jewish community, friendly people & great schools.  Allison admits being nervous about snow and has lots of questions like “Do I buy a snow blower or hire someone to plow the driveway?  Where do I buy warm boots?  What’s the best way to survive winter?”  Please post a welcome to Cleveland message or winter-related suggestions on Allison’s Facebook page, send her an e-mail, or drop by for a family friendly service or activity.

Meet Trish Risman

by dscott 9/9/2011 12:11:00 PM

Raised in Newbury, Ohio, Trish worked as a teacher at Troy Elementary School in Burton and had no exposure to Cleveland’s Jewish community until she met Rob in 1996.  Every Chanukah while they were dating, Rob would visit Trish’s 3rd grade class to read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins as a way to expose her students to Jewish culture.  It was also a great way to woo his ladyJ!  Trish and Rob were married at Temple Israel Ner Tamid in 2005 and have chosen to raise their two sons, Nathan and Noah, in a Jewish home.  “Meeting Rob was beshert --  meant to be” enthuses Trish, who loves baking for the Jewish holidays and leading her family’s weekly Shabbat rituals.  The Rismans were warmly welcomed at Fairmount Temple Preschoolwhich led to involvement in a wonderful playgroup and a genuine sense of belonging.  Participating in Camp Wise’s Mom’s Camp  has enabled Trish to experience Jewish camping and further connect to the community.  Born in California, Trish believes that Cleveland is the best place to raise a family and enjoy all four seasons.  Favorite fall outings include visiting Patterson Fruit Farm and walking in the Chagrin River in Bentleyville.  Connect with Trish!

by dscott 6/20/2011 4:42:00 PM
Erika Friedman grew up in Shaker Heights , lived in New York for seven years, and then moved back to Shaker Heights to raise a family with the cute boy that she met in 4th grade, Jon Leiken.  Erika and Jon "believe that Cleveland is the best place to raise a family" and love visiting the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Great Lakes Science Center and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, love dining at Fire, Paladar, Sasa and Pacific East, and love cheering for the Cavs, Indians, Browns, and Monsters!!!  Erika started StrollerMama in 2005 with her good friend, Amy Schonfeld Feiglin, who she also met in fourth grade.  In addition to running an online store, Erika recently opened a beautiful new storefront (in Woodmere, Ohio on the corner of Chagrin and Brainard) that carries unique baby gifts, an expanded selection of car seats, high chairs and diaper bags, and even hosts music classes and “moms night out”.  This busy Mom of three can connect you to kid-friendly Cleveland and some really cool gear!
