Community through Corned Beef for Chicago-based Cleveland Jews

Friday, October 24, 2008

Sunday brunch at Corky and Lenny’s is nothing unusual formany east-side Clevelanders, but for someone living in the Windy City,it’s a rare treat reserved for trips home to visit family.   However, on one Sunday in November, Let My People Know (LMPK) will bring ataste of home to the exiles in Chicago, with a deli-style brunch from that very “Jewish Cleveland” institution.

“We’re throwing a Cleveland party,” said LMPKChair Steve Willensky.  “We’re puttingout the challenge to all the Clevelanders living in Chicago to see how many wecan bring together to share some good food, reminisce and have a greattime.  This is about building communityand making connections.”

Through a wide varietyof peer-to-peer and grass-roots efforts, LMPK is reaching out to nativeClevelanders in Chicago.  “Everyone I know in Clevelandhas friends and family living in Chicago,”said LMPK Community Concierge Niki Resnick. “We’re using Facebook, e-mail, the phone and other one-to-one ways toreach out and invite them to the brunch.  And, we’re asking them to spread the word totheir friends.  Everyone in Cleveland whoknows people in Chicagoshould tell them about it and encourage them to come.  It should be a really great turn out.”

LMPK is a projectof the Jewish Community Federation, to strengthen and grow Jewish Cleveland, with a focus on the attraction and retention of people in their 20s and30s.  Among its strategies, it isreaching out to native Clevelanders around the country with useful informationabout career opportunities in this region and the benefits of living here.  In July, LMPK launched its Web site, www.letmypeopleknowcleveland.com,which has received thousands of visits from people all over the U.S. and other countries, including Britain, Canada,South Africa and Israel.

This road-show isthe first of several outreach events that LMPK will be hosting outside Northeast Ohio.  “Wethink quite a few of them will ultimately move back to Cleveland,” saidWillensky.  “When it comes time to starta career or a family, it’s hard to find a place more welcoming or affordable thanCleveland.  They just need a little reminding how greatour city is.”

The Chicago brunch will takeplace on Sunday, Nov. 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at One Superior Place.  RSVPs are required for planningpurposes.  To make a reservation, or for moreinformation about the Chicagobrunch, contact LMPK Community Concierge Niki Resnick at 216.344.8292 or concierge@letmypeopleknowcleveland.com.
